Job Title: Invasive Species Monitoring Technician – Essex

Potential Start Date: May 5, 2025 but specific date to be determined (pending funding approval) 
Potential End Date: August 22, 2025 
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Essex Region Conservation Authority, Essex, ON 
Rate of Pay: $25.11 per hour + 4% vacation pay 
Number of Positions: 1 

Applicants must be youth between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period, as per the requirements of the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs Program.

The Invasive Species Monitoring Technician is an exciting opportunity to work within the OFAH Foundation’s Invading Species Awareness Program and Essex Region Conservation Authority. The successful candidate will conduct monitoring and surveillance of invasive species in the Essex Region, including speaking and conducting seminars, workshops, and/or presentations.

Education and Qualifications: 

  • College or university education in fish and wildlife, biology, environmental science, or equivalent work-related experience in the relevant fields;
  • Minimum of two years natural resources monitoring experience;
  • Education and outreach experience would be an asset; 
  • Native and invasive aquatic plant identification skills;
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment; and
  • Valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Essential computer and database management skills (MS Office), written and oral communication skills, public relations, public speaking, interpersonal skills, project management, organizational and multi-tasking skills, time management, and problem solving required; and
  • Must be proficient with operating/maneuvering a recreational watercraft and vehicle while towing a trailer.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license (class G);
  • Clean driver’s abstract:
  • Valid fishing license;
  • Valid pleasure craft operators card;
  • Valid emergency first aid training with level A CPR and AED certification (as a minimum)
  • Valid OFAH membership (required at time of hire); and
  • OFAH employees are required to complete a criminal record check every three years.
